The brainchild of two morons—Simon Abrams and Steve Carlson—that should know better, but clearly don’t, the Bad Idea Podcast represents these two brave, but very stupid individuals’ attempt at finding treasure in the least likely places of the filmic world. Topics of discussion range from why Herschell Gordon Lewis apparently matters, Captain America on film, and any good excuse to get Steve to rewatch Roland Emmerich’s “Godzilla.”

Because Daddy Steve has a rather disgusting sense of humor, this is what happened: horror films in which, in some way, angry aborted murderous fetuses kill people. (Seriously, guys: This dude is someone’s dad now.) While only one of the films we talk about truly fulfills that topic, at least all of them glance off it and/or use abortion as a base theme; it then says something very weird about this irredeemably bad idea that the best film we talk about sticks closest to the killer-abortion theme while the worst uses it as window dressing. But that’s...well, it’s something anyway. At least our Netflix Grab Bag pick offers something less geared towards only the heartiest of constitutions: the American International Pictures H.P. Lovecraft adaptation Die, Monster, Die!, which features Boris Karloff doing his thing. Which is always a good idea. Unlike this podcast. The Bad Idea Podcast: We’re here to offend your mom!

—Steve Carlson

Anywho, that movie’s not really the chef d’oeuvre de shit I thought it’d be, but it did give us occasion to watch other films where the Internet is a scary virtual place— stuff like feardotcom and, uh, Vlog. The latter was more along the lines of the film we were looking for, though that’s not really the right way to put it...oh, and this month’s Netflix Grab Bag is Food of the Gods, the famous killer giant animals movie. It’s fun! Duh! All these opinions and more!

—Simon Abrams

To kick off the new year, Simon and Steve, your brave cinematic adventurers, are looking at a late and decidedly non-lamented subgenre: the disco musical! In our efforts to provide as much variety as possible, we dig up the boring (Roller Boogie), the Bollywood (Disco Dancer) and the totally berserk (Staying Alive, because holy crap, “Satan’s Alley”)—plus the infamous Can’t Stop the Music, which contains 10,000% of your recommended dietary allowance of the Village People. Then, in the Netflix Grab Bag, we check out an ’80s spy flick called The Order of the Black Eagle, which features a baboon who drives a tank and gives people the finger. New year, new ideas, new ground to explore: That’s your Bad Idea Podcast, here for you!

—Steve Carlson
